Hospitals spend hundreds and thousands of dollars annually on insurance and medical malpractice or negligence claims. Hence, healthcare facilities often employ health care risk managers to reduce the error rates, accidents and other adverse events. In addition to large multi-speciality hospitals, nursing homes, mental health institutions, small clinics and rehabilitation centers also hire health care risk managers. Experienced healthcare risk professionals can also work as freelance risk management consultants.
The goal of all risk management strategies in the healthcare industry is to lower the chance of occurrence of any risks and losses. There are four main areas of focus for risk management professionals: identifying possible risks, calculate the chances of an adverse impact, calculate and comprehend the size of the adverse impact and develop strategies to control the risk. In the case of medicine, risk management techniques aim to provide a more professional level of medical care and minimize the ratio of medical malpractice claim.
